The Hughenden is a family owned property since 1993. Susanne Gervay is an Australian children's author, and her sister Elizabeth is an artist. Both sisters are very involved in the running of the property, in collaboration with Jacqui Rothwell, Manager.
The Hughenden, built as the residence of Dr Frederick Harrison Quaife, was then in turn - a Masonic Hall, a guest house, a nurses home, a dance hall . . . the Riviere College. World War II marked another change for The Hughenden as its heritage became slowly lost, deteriorating into a lodging house for transients.
By the 1990s The Hughenden had fallen into serious disrepair, half hidden behind a concrete fence. It was then that sisters Susanne and Elizabeth Gervay discovered it. They fell in love with its decaying architecture, seeing beyond the ruin. With their father's legacy and the building expertise of their brother Thomas, they embarked on the restoration of The Hughenden to re-establish the heritage of this gracious residence and open The Hughenden to visitors and guests.
